May 23--BERKELEY -- Police are looking for a Nissan car that hit a Berkeley police officer early Tuesday, then drove off into Oakland, where patrol officers lost the vehicle.

The officer's name and details on his injuries, which a police spokeswoman called moderate, were not immediately available. The officer was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

The incident started about 5:21 a.m. Tuesday, when police went to investigate the sound of a young girl crying loudly inside a car at Bateman and Webster streets. The model of the car was not provided, but it was parked not far from the parent education center at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center.

Authorities don't know why the driver and child were in the area.

When an officer approached the car, the driver suddenly accelerated and struck the officer, said police spokeswoman Sgt. Mary Kusmiss in a statement. The car took off and police gave chase. The car was last seen on Interstate 580 near Lincoln Avenue in Oakland. The investigation is ongoing.
