May 11--A man shooting through apartment walls, setting fires and refusing to talk to investigators about his dead mom, was shot and killed by cops.
Cops tracked down Dennis Hughes at his girlfriend's apartment in San Francisco Wednesday, after his mom was found dead in her home in Rohnert Park.
Cops in Rohnert Park did a welfare check on Diane Hughes Tuesday, and found her dead in a pool of blood. An autopsy showed she was killed by blunt force trauma to her head.
Investigators wanted to talk with her son, Dennis, who lived with her. Rohnert Park Police tracked him to his girlfriend's place on Post Street in San Francisco and knocked on the door Wednesday afternoon.
Hughes refused to talk to the cops, and started shooting. The officers were able to back away from the apartment without getting hurt. They called for backup from San Francisco, and other tactical teams.
For about an hour, cops say Hughes continued to fire shots through walls, ceilings and the floor. The 18-unit apartment, and nearby buildings were evacuated.
Hughes then set fire to a bedroom, but because he was still shooting, firefighters could not safely enter the apartment.
Two sharpshooters from San Francisco Police were positioned near the apartment, and took a shot, killing Hughes.
Two handguns were found inside the apartment. Investigators questioned the girlfriend, no word if she will face charges.
Investigators are still looking for Diane Hughes' white, Toyota Highlander, California License plate #5SGC869. It was not at her house, and wasn't found near the San Francisco apartment where Dennis was. It could contain evidence identifying Diane's killer.
Rohnert Park Police, San Francisco Police, the District Attorney and Internal Affairs continue to investigate this shooting.
