May 08--A soldier shot by a police officer early Saturday remained in critical condition at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center on Monday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.
The soldier, 27-year-old Staff Sgt. Mark Lewis Salazar, was shot shortly after 3 a.m. in the driveway of his family's home on the 6500 block of Pacific Avenue in the Middlecreek neighborhood of western Fayetteville.
Salazar is a graphic illustrator for the for the Army's 4th Military Information Support Group at Fort Bragg, a unit that is part of the U.S. Army Special Operations Command, said Sgt. 1st Class Michael Noggle, a spokesman for the command.
According to the Police Department, three officers went to the neighborhood in response to a complaint about gunfire. The department says the officers found Salazar in the driveway and ordered him to show his hands.
A department news release says Salazar raised a gun in the direction of the officers, and one of the officers shot him.
The shooting is being investigated by the State Bureau of Investigation, as is routine. The three officers -- Michael Bohannon, James Tart and Chase Robinson -- were put on paid administrative leave.
