May 07--A transient man faces several charges after police say he attempted to assault officers on Friday.
According to the Carlisle Police Department, David M. Atraga, 47, no address listed, was charged with terroristic threats, resisting arrest, institutional vandalism of an educational facility and disorderly conduct at Meeting House Heights Road in Carlisle at 2:40 p.m. Friday.
Officers were asked to assist the state police with a citizen who was looking for his disabled vehicle in the borough.
When officers arrived on the scene, police say the trooper and officer took Atraga to the location on Meeting House Heights Road. At the time, police say he had already been given a warning by the trooper that he would be arrested for disorderly conduct if he continued his behavior of making threats to police and using vulgar language.
He then began a verbal tirade using vulgar language and making threats to harm various nationalities, at a store on West Louther Street prior to being taken to his car, according to police.
When they arrived at the vehicle, which was in a residential neighborhood with people outside tending to their lawns, Atraga began another tirade using vulgar language and screaming, police said.
He then went to his car, picked up a guitar and held it like a baseball bat, and ordered the officer to shoot him or he would beat the officer with it, according to police.
During the arrest, Atraga tensed up and threatened to take the officer's gun and shoot him in the face with it, police said. Police reported that Atraga said he would kill the officer and "all the other rich Americans."
Police say he attempted to make them throw him into the police car, saying if they did not, they would pay for it with their lives.
At the Cumberland County Prison, Atraga continued his verbal tirade with several prison staff members, making verbal threats of physical harm and death, according to police.
When he was taken to a holding cell, he damaged the cell by ripping a handicapped accessible bar from the wall, holding it like a bat and held the guards at bay with it, daring them to come in and get him, police said.
Guards were forced to go in and remove the object from his cell, according to police.
