Pa. Sheriff's Deputy Injured in Scuffle With Prisoner

April 30--A York County sheriff's deputy suffered an injury while trying to subdue an unruly prisoner Saturday night.

Marvin L. Pope, of the 1000 block of West Poplar Street in West York is charged with aggravated harassment by a prisoner, assault by a prisoner and simple assault, according to charging documents.

The injured deputy was taken to York Hospital for treatment for a broken left thumb.

Pope was taken to the county's central booking unit in the York County Judicial Center by West York Police about 11:30 p.m. after an incident at the Overbrook Cafe, 40 Overbrook Ave. in the borough, an official said. He faces charges in relation to that incident, the official said.

Pope was patted down and fitted with ankle restraints.

Altercation: While in the holding cell area, Pope became aggressive and was yelling profanities, the documents state.

A deputy tried to quell the situation by talking to Pope, who refused to comply with the deputy's commands to get in a holding cell.

A corporal was alerted to the situation and went to help. The corporal opened the door to a cell and ordered Pope to "step in the cell or you will be tased," documents state.

Pope continued to refuse the commands and took off a sweatshirt he was wearing.

The corporal fired stun gun probes at Pope, but Pope was able to stop the probes with his sweatshirt. The corporal then had to "dry stun," where a stun gun is placed directly on a person, Pope, documents state.

Pope and the corporal fell to the ground, at which point deputies were able to put Pope in a restraint chair. Pope then spit in the corporal's left eye and spit on another deputy, documents state.

During the fall, the corporal injured his left thumb, documents state.

Pope also punched the corporal in the back of his head during the incident, documents state.
