FITCHBURG -- A police officer was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation after responding with firefighters to a kitchen fire Monday morning, according to Deputy Fire Chief Kevin Curran.
The officer, whose name was not given, entered the building believing there was a child inside 33 Mechanic St., because a woman there made statements indicating her 3-year-old "baby" was inside, Curran said. She was referring to her dog, who made it out of the fire.
Firefighters were on scene about 45 minutes after the blaze was reported at 7:30 a.m., Curran said. It appeared to have started with unattended food and spread into the kitchen cabinets.
