PASADENA -- Police Chief Phillip Sanchez announced Tuesday that he has asked the Office of Independent Review to do an independent investigation in to the fatal officer involved shooting of Kendrec McDade.
Sanchez said the decision to call the group headed by Michael Gennaco came late Monday night. He made the announcement after a meeting with members of the local clergy who have expressed concerned about the shooting of McDade.
McDade was shot to death following the report of an armed robbery at a taco stand. A 17-year-old accomplice was arrested in connection with the incident. Although police officers said they saw McDade reach for his waistband before being shot, no gun has been recovered.
According to a statement issued Tuesday, detectives reviewed a video recording that captured events related to the shooting. The police department has also reviewed audio recordings, including 9-1-1 tapes associated with the initial calls into the Pasadena Police Department. In a public records request to the police department this newspaper has asked for copies of all materials related to the shooting investigation.
Tuesday's statement indicates that "Gennaco has been investigating police incidents for the past 10 years." And, "the Pasadena Police Department's standard protocol for officers involved in an officer involved shooting incident is to schedule a period of time off during the initial investigation.
Officials have not identified the officers involved in the shooting of McDade.
