It's a tough job, but apparently lots of people want to do it. Oakland's police department has received 2,300 applications to enter the department's first academy in several years.
On Wednesday, 930 of those applicants took the written exam.
"It's great to see such a big interest in becoming an Oakland police officer," Deputy Director of Police Gilbert Garcia said.
The written test is just part of a long application process. Applicants who pass the written portion will still have to go through background checks and face interview panels that include community members.
The department, which has seen its staffing drop significantly since 2010, is planning an academy with more than 50 recruits to begin in August.
