March 17--An Eckert Street man is being held on second-degree assault, drug and other charges after allegedly injuring two Buffalo police officers who stopped his car in front of his home Thursday afternoon. Andrew A. Avellino, 21, who faces a possible seven-year prison term for injuring Officers Maurice Foster and Adam Stephany, also is being held on drug and marijuana possession, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and obstructing governmental administration.
When the officers stopped the black Chevy Caprice Avellino was driving in front of 15 Eckert, he ran into his house and allegedly dropped bags found to contain marijuana and Suboxone, an addictive drug used to treat opiate addiction.
Inside the house Avellino allegedly fought with both officers until he was forcibly wrestled to the floor and handcuffed.
Foster suffered injuries to his right hand and forearm and right leg and knee, and Stephany suffered right shoulder and right knee injuries. Both were treated at Erie County Medical Center.
