March 17--SWEETWATER -- Nicole, a 12-year-old bloodhound that worked in the K-9 unit at the Sweetwater Police Department has lost her sight and needs a loving home.

Nicole worked with the police department for 10 years helping find missing children and seniors with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. She retired in 2009 after developing glaucoma and losing sight in one eye. She is now completely blind after losing sight in her second eye.

The Sweetwater K-9 trainer who took Nicole in after she retired is now training a bomb-sniffing dog and is not able to care for both dogs.

Nicole will make the perfect pet for the right home, police spokewoman Michelle Hammontree said. The Police Department has also reached out to the Humane Society of Greater Miami for help in finding Nicole a home.

The Humane Society of Greater Miami is also trying to find a home for a blind, 12-year-old Shi Tzu in its foster care.

For more information on either dog, please call Michelle Hammontree at the Sweetwater Police Station at 786-317-2322 or Dani Kandera at the Humane Society at 305-749-1825.
