March 12--PORTLAND -- A Cumberland County Jail inmate was caught Saturday morning as he was crawling back from a female inmate's cell, the sheriff's office reported today.
The inmate left his cell in the maximum security pod sometime after 11:50 p.m. Friday night, made his way to the female's cell where they had sex. He was caught as he tried to return to his cell, according to the sheriff's office.
Arien L'Italien, 23, of Biddeford was spotted crawling across a second-floor landing in the maximum security pod of the jail at 12:50 a.m. Saturday.
A review of security video shows L'Italien had jimmied the lock on his cell door and snuck into the cell of Karla Wilson, 25, where the two had sex, according to Sheriff Kevin Joyce.
Jail officials found that both L'Italien and Wilson had stuffed material into their cell door locks that prevented them from closing securely.
L'Italien is being held for federal authorities after a shootout on Jan. 27 with deputy U.S. marshals, who were attempting to arrest L'Italien on a felony warrant charge of aggravated assault in Biddeford. The marshals said L'Italien ran and shot at the them and they shot back and hit him in the leg near Sacred Heart Church in the Parkside neighborhood. He faces a charge of attempted-murder, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison, and a firearm charge that carries a maximum sentence of 10 years.
Wilson is awaiting trial on four counts of gross sex assualt and 2 counts of aggravated assault.
The two inmates know each other through friends, police said. The sex was consensual. L'Italien had somehow communicated with Wilson through the jail ventilation system, police said.
