March 06--An Indiana University student faces charges of battery and intimidation with a weapon after a woman reported he doused her in lighter fluid and threatened her with a knife and scissors after the two ended their relationship.

Yuantong Yang, 19, was arrested Sunday afternoon on preliminary charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon, criminal recklessness and battery. Yang remained at the Monroe County Jail Tuesday morning on a $5,000 surety, $500 cash.

Police were called by resident assistants to a report of a battery at Yang's room on the 12th floor of Eigenmann Hall on East 10th Street at 2:57 p.m. Sunday.

Yang had been in an argument with a woman earlier in the day, "which led to them deciding to end the relationship, then to the physical altercation," IU police chief Keith Cash stated in an email.

The woman, 19, is also a student and lives in another dorm.

She told police Yang bit her hand, threatened her with a knife, doused her with lighter fluid and threatened to set her hair and face on fire.

Yang reportedly grabbed a pair of scissors and attempted to cut the woman, and she grabbed the scissors. He then bit her hand in an attempt to retrieve the scissors from her, Cash said.

The woman ran out of his dorm room to another room for safety and called police. Medics checked the woman for injuries; she was not transported to the hospital.
