March 02--A Phenix City man is in intensive care after he swallowed an unknown quantity of drugs at a traffic stop, police said.
Bobby Gates, 38, and Garrett McKay Reid, 28, were stopped by Columbus police at Oates Avenue and 43th Street Thursday afternoon for not wearing seat belts. According to police, Gates, who was driving, got into a fight with police, while Reid tossed a small amount of marijuana from the car.
During the fight, Gates swallowed an unknown amount of drugs and was transported to The Medical Center for treatment. Cpl. John Allen said the unknown substance caused Gates' heart rate to shoot up over 200 and put him in intensive care.
Officers also found 49 Oxycontin pills, with a street value of $1,225, 99 Xanax pills, with a street value of $2,475, and 33 soma pills, with a street value of $825, in Reid's possession.
Reid was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, possession of drug-related objects, violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act and providing false information to a police officer.
When Gates is released he will be charged with possession of drug-related objects, violation of the Georgia Controlled Substance Act and obstruction, Allen said.
