SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- A fight between San Bernardino police and an armed Fontana man Wednesday night ended when the man reached for his handgun and police shot and killed him.

Anthony Paul Gilmore Jr., 23, died at Loma Linda University Medical Center about an hour after the shooting, police said.

Two San Bernardino officers spotted a car speeding through a residential neighborhood in the 200 block of West 16th Street at 7:46p.m. The vehicle had no back license plate and ran a stop sign.

Police approached the driver when she stopped in the parking lot of an apartment complex near 16th Street and Arrowhead Avenue.

Officers then detained the driver and a passenger because of the traffic violations. Another passenger ran from police after they asked if he had a weapon, officials said.

Police say the passenger and officers fell during a struggle. The man continued struggling and reached for a handgun on the ground next to him.

He put the gun under his body, officials said.

Police said one of the officers feared that the man was going to shoot him or his partner, so he shot the man several times.

Police say the gun Gilmore tried to reach was his own and not taken from police during the struggle.
