A man armed with a high-powered rifle walked onto Willcox High School and began shooting during a varsity baseball game Thursday, the school's superintendent said.

A student was injured from shards of spraying glass and was taken to Northern Cochise Community Hospital, said Superintendent Richard Rundhaug of Willcox Unified School District.

The student is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries, Rundhaug said. Northern Cochise Community Hospital administrators did not return telephone calls.

There were no reports of any other injuries, Rundhaug said.

A school employee was trying to clear the area during the shooting and he was fired upon, but not hit, the school official said.

The man "entered the school property during the baseball game and fired multiple shots toward the baseball field," Rundhaug said. Willcox was playing Valley Union High School from Elfrida.

The man firing the weapon was taken into custody by Willcox Department of Public Safety officers, Rundhaug said. He said a second man was also detained, and officers are seeking a third man.

Jake Weaver, director of the Willcox Department of Public Safety, did not return repeated telephone calls.

The school was put under lockdown until about 5 p.m. after the 3:30 p.m. incident, Rundhaug said.
