Pittsburgh police officials took the first step on Wednesday to fire city Officer Adam Skweres if he is convicted on charges of using his power and position to try to coerce women into sexual acts, a union official said.

Daniel O'Hara, president of the city Fraternal Order of Police, said the necessary paperwork was filed but that a final decision won't be made until the case is adjudicated. Police officials could not be reached for comment last night.

Skweres, 34, of Lincoln Place faces a preliminary hearing on Friday on charges of bribery, coercion, oppression, indecent assault and attempted rape. Four women have told investigators that Skweres offered to help them out of legal problems in exchange for sex.

Skweres, who was arrested on Feb. 16, was released from jail on Monday and placed on house arrest. His attorneys have said he is innocent.
