A 17-year-old student was killed and another teen wounded at a South Deering neighborhood alternative school this morning, and another student there has been arrested, authorities said.
The stabbing occurred around 7:30 a.m. in the 10200 block of South Crandon Avenue, authorities said. Both injured students were taken in serious-to-critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the Chicago Fire Department.
One of the teens later died, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office, which had no further details. Police said he was 17.
Preliminary reports indicate there had been an ongoing dispute between the teen in custody and the teen who died, police said. The suspect attacked the other teen and wounded another student who apparently got in the way, police said.
The students apparently were entering the school when the attack took place, said Frank Shuftan, a spokesman for the Chicago Public Schools.
The stabbing took place at AMIKids Infinity Chicago, an alternative school that contracts with the Chicago Board of Education, according to Sherri Ulleg, a spokeswoman for Tampa, Fla.-based AMIKids Inc.
All students at the school are ages 14 to 18, Ulleg said.
About 20 students, both CPS and non-CPS, attend the school, Shuftan said.
"We provide services for kids that have been expelled or (have been) long-term suspended from CPS," Ulleg said. "They generally have severe emotional or learning disabilities and can't perform in the public schools system. They either stay for a period of time before returning to CPS or finish their schooling with AMI."
Chicago schools security personnel were working with AMIKids' own security officers and Chicago police, Shuftan said.
