Idaho Studies Truck Speed Limit Legislation
Feb. 16--A proposal to raise semitrailer truck speeds to 75 miles per hour on rural Idaho interstates is headed for study hall.
The Senate Transportation Committee has asked the Idaho Department of Transportation to bring together stakeholders, including the American Automobile Association and the Idaho State Police, to look at the issue.
Sen. Jim Hammond, R-Coeur d'Alene, the committee chairman, sought a bill that would make truck and car speeds the same. On hundreds of miles of Idaho interstates, cars can travel up to 75 mph but trucks can go only 65.
State police officials say it is safer to have big trucks and smaller vehicles moving at the same speed. National studies are inconclusive.
No deadline has yet been set for the study to be completed.
