Feb. 16--WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Weber County Sheriff's Deputy Tyler Greenhalgh saved a baby's life Wednesday morning.
Weber County dispatchers got a 911 call around 10 a.m. from a mother whose 2-weekold son was having difficulty breathing.
Greenhalgh pulled up to the family's Washington Terrace home in less than a minute and before the medical responders arrived, said Sgt. Brion Flinders, his commanding officer.
The deputy found the baby was not breathing and that his heart had stopped as well. Since Greenhalgh also happens to be a trained emergency medical technician, he performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the infant.
By the time the ambulance got to the home, the boy was breathing again and crying, Flinders said. He was taken to Primary Children's Medical Center in Salt Lake City and is expected to be released within the next two days.
The baby had respiratory syncytial virus, he said. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, RSV is the most common cause of lung infections in infants.
The grateful mother is "messaging everybody on Facebook" and thanking the deputy, Flinders said.
The sheriff's office started an EMT training program about four and a half years ago. Greenhalgh was among the officers in the program's first graduating class.
