Feb. 12--Sgt. Steve Bartley, 35, of the Muleshoe Police Department was released from University Medical Center after he was shot twice responding to a domestic disturbance call late Friday night.
According to Chief Brian Frieda, Bartley responded to a call at about 11:30 p.m. Friday and was shot twice by Juan Mendoza Quezada, 44.
Bartley was hit once in the side and once in the chest, Frieda said, but Bartley's bullet-proof vest stopped the bullet in his chest.
Frieda said Bartley returned fire, hitting Quezada multiple times, Frieda said. Both were transported to Muleshoe Area Medical Center and then taken to Lubbock hospitals, the chief said.
Bartley was taken to UMC and released Saturday afternoon, and Quezada was taken to Covenant Medical Center, he said.
Quezada remains in critical but stable condition, Frieda said.
Frieda said the investigation has been turned over to the Texas Rangers and the 287th District Attorney's office, and he could not comment further.
He added he is meeting Monday with the Rangers at the DA's office to get more information on the investigation.
