At least 71 cattle were killed when the truck they were in was hit by a train in western Manitoba, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said.

The accident happened Tuesday night in heavy fog near Carberry, 100 miles west of Winnipeg, the Winnipeg Free Press reported.

The truck had 82 cattle on board when the train struck it, the RCMP said. Eleven surviving cows ran loose for hours and police issued a warning to drivers to be extra vigilant for them as the fog persisted through Wednesday morning, the report said.

The truck driver was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries and none of the train crew members was hurt, police said.

Two of the train's freight cars derailed and demolished a storage shed and rail crews were working Wednesday at getting the cars back on the tracks, the report said.

Police hadn't announced any charges by midday Wednesday.
