Jan. 23--A 30-year-old Exeter Township man was arrested this morning on attempted murder and related charges after he repeatedly struck his 74-year-old grandmother with her cane, severely injuring her, township police said.
Michael McDaniel surrendered to police outside the house in the 5000 block of Oley Turnpike Road about 15 minutes after the grandmother, Helen Badulak, called 9-1-1 at 6:33 a.m. to report she was being struck repeatedly by a her grandson, Police Chief Christopher L. Neidert said.
An officer stayed with the grandmother and tried to control her bleeding while waiting for an ambulance, which could not drive up the long driveway because it was snow covered, Neidert said.
Emergency personnel carried Badulak down the lane to an ambulance that took her to Reading Hospital. Information on her medical condition was not immediately available.
McDaniel also called 9-1-1 after the assault and told a dispatcher that he tried to kill his grandmother and wanted police to shoot him. Police arrived and surrounded the house and ordered McDaniel to come out.
McDaniel's parents, Alan and Nina McDaniel, were in the home but were not harmed.
Investigators said they don't know what prompted McDaniel to attack his grandmother.
McDaniel was taken to the Berks County Courthouse for processing and arraignment.
