Stolen Dog Found During Raid on N.M. Meth Lab
A bull mastiff stolen from the West Side animal shelter about a month ago was found in unusual fashion recently: during a meth lab raid.
Albuquerque police on Jan. 11 zeroed in on an apartment complex in the 900 block of San Pedro SE, where they uncovered three small methamphetamine labs.
Also discovered at the scene was a large dog.
The canine was immediately taken into protective custody by the city's Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department. After an examination, workers determined she was the dog -- known as Peggy Sue -- who had been stolen from the West Side shelter on Dec. 27, said Mary Knight of the department.
When Peggy Sue originally arrived at the shelter, she was a stray with a scar on her right leg, an ear infection and eye entropion, the turning in of an eyelid. Knight said those conditions helped officials identify Peggy Sue after the raid.
Peggy Sue is expected to remain in protective custody until mid-week.
Ultimately, Animal Welfare wants to find a suitable home for Peggy Sue and will make a list of people interested in opening their home to the bull mastiff.
