INDIANAPOLIS

After being grounded for nearly two years due to budget constraints, Indianapolis' police helicopter is back in service.

Last year, the department sold its turbine-powered helicopter to finance repairs on an aircraft that first went into service in 1968.

Despite its age, pilots said the helicopter has the latest technology, including a forward-facing infrared sensor to find people on the ground, a powerful spotlight and high-tech computer capabilities.

The helicopter is budgeted to fly 400 hours a year through 2015 and will fly for the Super Bowl, police said.

The helicopter is the oldest police craft in service in the country.
