One Killed in Calif. When Burglary Suspects Crash Into Car

Jan. 20, 2012
Burglary suspects fleeing police crashed into a car Wednesday morning, killing a motorist at the intersection of Cherry Street and Mowry Avenue, authorities said.

Jan. 18--NEWARK --

The three suspects were taken into custody and hospitalized, one with life-threatening injuries, Cmdr. Robert Douglas said.

Rajwaun Watkins, Jabrie Watts and Deshon Collier -- each 20 years old with extensive criminal histories -- were arrested on suspicion of parole and probation violations, Douglas said.

Police said additional charges in connection with a residential burglary and the fatal crash are pending further investigation.

The suspects were injured in the accident that sent their Chevy Malibu tumbling about 50 yards

before it came to a stop overturned on its roof.

The other vehicle -- a two-door Honda -- was knocked onto the sidewalk next to an Alameda County fire station. The driver of the Honda, a Pleasanton man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His identity is being withheld until his family is notified.

Officers had responded at 9:54 a.m. to reports of a burglary on Mistflower Avenue, near Central Avenue, where three men entered a residence by kicking in the front door, Douglas said.

Moments later, officers spotted the Chevy Malibu, which matched witnesses' description of the vehicle and tried to make a traffic stop along southbound Cedar Boulevard.

The driver sped away with police in pursuit, but officers called

off the chase when the driver began proceeding erratically at nearly 80 mph, Douglas said.

Police said the driver eventually crashed into the Honda at the intersection, more than a mile from the burglary.

Authorities rescued one man who was trapped inside the vehicle with life-threatening injuries. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital.

The other two ran. One was arrested nearby, and the other was taken into custody after officers found him hiding at Pick-n-Pull, a junkyard about a half-mile west of the accident scene, police said.

Investigators have not determined yet who was driving the vehicle, Douglas said.
