Jan. 19--WENATCHEE -- Hit and run driving within sight of RiverCom dispatchers is a good way to get caught.
Dispatchers -- located in the top floor of the Wenatchee Police station at the corner of Yakima and South Mission streets -- heard a crunching sound about 7 p.m. Wednesday and looked out their windows to see a semitrailer leaving the scene of an accident, said Sgt. Cherie Smith with the Wenatchee Police Department.
The driver had made a turn too sharply and knocked over a fire hydrant plug, which did not erupt with water, and scraped off a crosswalk control box at the corner of South Mission and Yakima.
Dispatchers watched the truck's progress on cameras set up along the street and directed officers to the truck's location. Jason R. Shaw, 41, Bellingham, was arrested in the 1500 block of South Wenatchee Avenue for hit and run involving property, driving while license suspended and driving without a commercial endorsement.
