Jan. 17--A police sting operation turned violent in northwest suburban Carpentersville today when undercover officers acting as narcotics buyers shot at a man who had tried to flee after selling drugs to the officers, authorities said.
Police said undercover officers from Carpentersville and Streamwood had made arrangements to meet and purchase drugs from two suspects in the parking lot of a McDonald's along Illinois Highway 25 in Carpentersville. After the transaction was complete, the officers then identified themselves and attempted to arrest the two suspects, police said.
At that point, one of the suspects attempted to ram the officers with his car, striking an unmarked police vehicle twice, Carpentersville police said. Two officers were slightly injured exiting the car and then shot at one of the suspect's vehicle as it fled.
One of the suspects was taken into custody at the scene; the suspect who fled the scene was pursued by police through multiple suburbs and eventually was apprehended in Itasca about 20 miles away, officials said.
Carpentersville Police Cmdr. Tim Bosshart said the driver, who has not yet been identified, was injured and was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge. His condition was not immediately. Bosshart said he does not know if the man was struck by a bullet.
A staffer who answered the phone at the McDonald's at 1660 Kennedy Avenue at 1:45 p.m. said the eatery had closed after the incident.
Lakewood School, which is directly across the street from the McDonald's, went into lockdown immediately after the gunshots were reported. District spokeswoman Allison Strupeck said the school went into "code red" lockdown, which involves locking all doors, closing blinds and shutting off the lights. After they were informed the incident moved to a different area, they loosened the lockdown, but still kept inside and outside doors locked until about 2 p.m. The district sent out an automated phone call to all parents.
