Jan. 17--NEW HAVEN -- Police said a two car accident involving a state trooper Saturday happened as the trooper was chasing a motorist who refused to stop on the highway.

According to New Haven police, the crash happened at 11:28 p.m. at Main Street and Woodward Avenue.

Trooper Kyle Bombace was on duty and in his squad car when he attempted to pull over a motorist on Interstate 95 just prior to the Woodward Avenue off ramp. The motorist was reported to have slowed down, but with the close proximity to the off ramp, jumped off the highway and attempted to flee. The trooper followed with his emergency lights and siren engaged, police said, and the car sped through the red light on Main Street at Woodward Avenue, narrowly missing a motorist entering the intersection from Woodward.

The trooper was unable to stop and struck the car in the intersection.

John Ciriello, the operator of the other vehicle involved in the crash, was taken by ambulance to a hospital for treatment.

Bombace was treated at the scene. Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. A witness to the accident confirmed the trooper had his emergency lights and siren on.
