A San Rafael police officer suffered minor injuries early Saturday morning when his police cruiser was struck by a hit-and-run driver.

Officer James Bellamy was one of several San Rafael officers who responded to a disturbance at a Canal Street apartment building at about 1:53 Saturday morning. According to police, about 10 to 15 people had been reported throwing bottles at a vehicle near the 400 block of Canal Street, and one of those people was reportedly aiming a gun at the driver.

Bellamy was en route to the disturbance when a vehicle pulled into his path from the driveway of 555 Francisco Boulevard East. Bellamy was unable to avoid the collision. The other vehicle drove away from the crash and was found, abandoned, a short distance away on Harbor Street, having sustained major rear end damage.

The driver and passenger of that vehicle were located walking away from the vehicle and detained by members of the California Highway Patrol. The driver is unlicensed and uninsured.

Officer Bellamy, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, drove to the Kaiser Permenante emergency room in San Rafael, where he was examined and released.

The California Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation of the collision. A CHP spokesman could not be reached for comment Sunday.

Deputies from the Marin County Sheriff's Department assisted in the investigation of the initial reported disturbance, but found nothing there upon their arrival.
