Mich. Man Bites Off Third of Woman's Nose
A 56-year-old Grand Rapids man is in custody and facing charges of mayhem after allegedly biting off about a third of a woman's nose Monday night.
Grand Rapids police were called at about 9 p.m. to a party store in the 700 block of Stocking Ave. NW after a woman showed up bleeding and missing part of her nose, said Lt. Scott Weitzel of the Grand Rapids Police Department. The 44-year-old woman told police she was in an apartment with about a half-dozen other people and got into an argument with a man, later identified by police as Stephen Medawis.
The altercation led to the man biting off the "lower third" of the woman's nose, police said.
"I'm presuming, I don't know for a fact they were having some adult beverages or whatever the case may be," Weitzel said.
After taking the woman's statement police went to a two-unit apartment in the 700 block of 5th Street NW. Officers found fresh blood on the stairs leading to the second of the two units.
"Officers on the scene (found) the piece of the nose that was bitten off lying on the landing there," Weitzel said.
The woman was taken to the hospital and doctors tried to reattach the piece. It was unknown if the operation was successful.
Medawis was arraigned in 61st District Court on Monday. The mayhem charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
He remained in custody Monday on a $50,000 cash or surety bond. He faces a Jan. 23 preliminary examination.
