Jan. 08--FAIRFIELD -- Emergency personnel responded to two accidents on the Merritt Parkway Sunday morning, one of which involved a state police trooper.

Around 2:30 a.m. firefighters and state police responded to the northbound side of the roadway near exit 46, where a parked state police cruiser had been hit.

State police said a 2011 Honda Accord driven by 35-year-old Bryce Poland, of Monroe, veered off the road and crashed into Trooper Ryan Sawicki's cruiser.

Sawicki, 29, of Bridgeport, sustained non life-threatening injuries, state police said. He was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in Bridgeport for treatment.

About an hour later, at 3:20 a.m., firefighters said they responded to another accident, this time on the southbound side of the highway between exits 44 and 42.

Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola said that when he arrived, there was a vehicle on its roof. It was fully involved in fire.

The driver of the car had escaped and was evaluated by paramedics at the scene. She was the only person in the car at the time of the accident and was not taken to a hospital, firefighters said.

The Westport Fire Department was called to assist.
