SHELBYVILLE, Ind.

An armed suspect remains hospitalized after firing shots at officers early Sunday, Indiana State Police said.

Shelbyville police said at about 11 p.m. on Saturday, Lyman Dawson, 22, was attempting to break into a vehicle at the Family Video store at the corner of Colescott and Harrison streets

Dawson fled the scene and ran to a home in the 700 block of Elm Street where he allegedly broke into a residence before going back to the 700 block of Harrison Street.

?On Harrison Street, Dawson is alleged to have shot Ryan Rooks, who was in his upstairs apartment in the 700 block of Harrison Street. Rooks is reported to have yelled toward Dawson asking what all the noise was about, which is when Dawson raised his pistol and shot toward Rooks, striking him in the leg,? ISP spokesman David Bursten said.

Dawson then fled the scene and broke into the basement of another home in the 700 block of Harrison Street, police said.

Moments later, he was encountered by three Shelbyville police officers and allegedly opened fire on them. One of the officers fired back, injuring Dawson, police said.

Dawson was flown by medical helicopter to Methodist Hospital and was said to be in critical condition. Officials did not say if he was facing any charges.

ISP investigators said the investigation is ongoing and the three Shelbyville police officers have been place on paid administrative leave.
