Three individuals were being questioned today in the slaying of Chicago Police Officer Clifton Lewis, according to law enforcement sources.

The three were being questioned by Grand Central Area detectives, the sources said.

Lewis, 41, an eight-year police veteran, was shot and killed Dec. 29 during a robbery at a West Side convenience store.

He was off-duty from his police job and working security when two masked robbers burst into the store, M&M Quick Foods, 1201 N. Austin Blvd., opened fire with a high-powered weapon -- akin to a TEC-9 gun -- and fatally wounded him, police said.

Sources said cash was taken from the register and the officer's gun is missing.

Lewis drew and fired his weapon, according to police, who declared that he had died in the line of duty as a result, affording him today's funeral service and honors.

He took the job at the store following a Dec. 9 robbery there.

No charges have been filed in the case as of 10 p.m., according to a Cook County state's attorney's office spokeswoman.
