A Wellington North man faces six charges after a truck whizzed through an OPP speed trap and nicked a cruiser in the process.

The 21-year-old is charged with dangerous driving, failing to remain at the scene of an accident and three counts of flight from police. He also faces charges of possession for the purposes of trafficking hash oil and marijuana.

The charges were laid Tuesday after police conducting radar enforcement just south of Guelph on Highway 6 at about 1 p.m. observed and tried to stop a northbound pickup truck travelling faster than the speed limit.

The officers turned on the cruiser's emergency lights to signal the driver to stop, but the vehicle accelerated, clipping the corner of the police vehicle. Police didn't follow due to unsafe conditions.

In the next half-hour, police spotted the pickup at other locations two more times and officers tried without success to stop the motorist. The 1996 GMC truck was spotted again by officers and blocked in at the intersection of Wellington Road 18 and Sixth Line, east of Fergus.

The pickup truck was driven into another police automobile in an apparent attempt to flee, but the driver was arrested by officers. The driver was combative and had to be restrained by officers, according to OPP.

Officers found a small quantity drugs after his arrest.

The motorist was held in custody for a bail hearing.
