Jan. 04--LAWRENCE -- Two men from Lowell were arrested last night after crashing a stolen car at the intersection of Andover Street and South Broadway.
The Massachusetts State Police Auto Theft unit was working in the city last night when the stolen car was reported as being on the move in the city, according to Lawrence Police Lt. Shawn Conway.
Patrolman Carl Farrington spotted the "older model Toyota" in parking lot of the McDonald's Restaurant on Andover Street around 7:30 p.m. But when Farrington approached the car on foot, the driver struck him before taking off, Conway said.
Conway said Farrington was fine but was transported to Lawrence General Hospital as a precaution.
The driver led police on a short pursuit going east on Andover Street until the car crashed into another motor vehicle at the intersection of Andover Street and South Broadway. Two people from the other car were sent to Lawrence General with minor injuries, Conway said.
The car also careened into a Lawrence Police cruiser causing significant front-end damage, Conway said. The cruiser will have to be taken out of service until it is repaired, he said.
The two men in the stolen car fled the scene on foot before being caught and arrested by state police, Conway said. State police would not release the names of the two men arrested or give any information on the pursuit last night.
Conway said he could not release the names last night because it wasn't the Lawrence Police Department's case.
Parts of Andover Street and South Broadway were blocked off last night as the cars were being towed.
