Texas Police Arrest One in Knife, Gun Duel

Police arrested a man in connection with yesterday's potentially deadly duel in Higginbotham Park.

Jan. 03--Police arrested a man in connection with yesterday's potentially deadly duel in Higginbotham Park.

Agapito Moralez, 36, was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after allegedly stabbing Ambrose DeLeon, 32, said Sgt. Jonathan Stewart with the Lubbock Police Department.

Moralez and DeLeon had agreed to meet in the park, located at 18th Street and Utica Avenue, to fight Monday, Stewart said.

The two are believed to have disagreed over a woman, Stewart added.

During the fight, Moralez stabbed DeLeon with a knife. DeLeon, in turn, shot Moralez. The two then separated and ran away from one another, Stewart said.

Police were called to the scene at 2:08 p.m.

DeLeon is being treated as a victim, though he and Moralez met intending to fight.

"They agreed to fight but then when deadly weapons came into play," Stewart said, "then it turns into something else."

Both were taken to University Medical Center for their injuries.

Moralez was discharged from the Emergency Center and was never admitted to the hospital, said UMC spokesperson Eric Finley.

Finley could not provide an update on DeLeon's condition because he is listed as a security patient, but DeLeon and Moralez were both expected to survive their injuries yesterday, Stewart said.
