Jan. 01--A Tarrant County Sheriff's deputy was seriously injured Saturday morning after his throat was slashed while confronting a suspect after the robbery of a credit union.

Deputy Fredrick Bauer, 58, an eight-year veteran of the sheriff's department who was off-duty and working as a security officer at the Fort Worth Community Credit Union at 6454 Brentwood Stair Road, was able to fire his weapon and hit the suspect, sheriff's spokesman Terry Grisham said.

Bauer was treated and released from Texas Health Harris Methoist Hospital in good condition, a hospital spokesman said late Saturday afternoon.

The suspect was shot in the head and is in critical condition at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, authorities said. He is expected to be charged with aggravated robbery and criminal attempt capital murder, Grisham said.

The robbery occurred at about 9:30 a.m. when a man entered the credit union, approached a teller and passed a robbery note demanding money, said a spokesperson with Fort Worth police.

The teller complied with the demand and the robber left with an undetermined amount of money but was confronted in the bank parking lot by the deputy, police said.

Grisham said another person was with the robbery suspect and escaped the scene and the deputy was able to fire his weapon at the suspect's car, breaking out windows. It is unknown by authorities if that person was hit.

Bauer is a resident of Hood County and a firefighter for the city of Granbury, the Hood County News is reporting on its Website.

Police and the FBI are investigating the robbery and the slashing, while the Sheriff's office is investigating the injured deputy's use of force, Grisham said.
