AMERICAN CANYON, Calif. -- A Concord resident was arrested Thursday night after allegedly leading police on a pursuit with his young triplets in the back seat, American Canyon police said Friday.
At about 9:25 p.m., officers stopped a Mercedes sports utility vehicle, driven by Travis Derbigny, 24, for a headlight that was not working. The officer approached the SUV to talk to Derbigny, but he suddenly drove off. That led to a police pursuit that began on Mini Drive and Highway 29 and ended on westbound Interstate 80 at the Magazine Street exit. During the pursuit, Derbigny ran a few stop signs, drove on the wrong side of the road and finally crashed into a chain-link fence in front of a Vallejo motel, police said.
Derbigny also struck two vehicles on I-80, causing one to spin into the center median and sideswiping the other. The driver of the car that spun out complained of pain, and the vehicle was totaled, police said.
At the time of the initial approach, the officer saw another male passenger and a few heads in the back seats. It was only after Derbigny was detained that they discovered his 3-year-old triplets were in the back seats, police said.
The children were taken to a local hospital for evaluation, but were deemed uninjured and were returned to their mother who lives in Vallejo, police said.
The passenger was questioned and released at the scene.
Derbigny, who once lived in Vallejo, was eventually arrested and booked into Napa County jail. He
also has felony and demeanor warrants out of Solano County. He was also allegedly found to be in possession of ammunition, police said.
The case is under investigation.
