FORT WORTH, Texas -- Police apprehended a gunman Monday who threatened to shoot workers at a doctor's office, then police and then himself.

Stephen Earl Herring, 58, was in the Fort Worth jail facing charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and assault on a public servant, according to police.

Herring was shocked with a Taser, which incapacitated him long enough for officers to gain control, police said.

The call came in about 11:15 a.m. from Texas Health Centers in the 6800 block of Manhattan Boulevard, near East Loop 820 and Randol Mill Road in east Fort Worth.

Police said Herring walked into a doctor's office and pulled a gun on employees inside.

When police arrived, he threatened to shoot them, and then to commit suicide, police said.

After the Taser strike, Herring was taken into custody without further incident about 12:15 p.m.

Police recovered a handgun and were continuing to investigate.
