Dec. 19--HAMDEN -- More than 700 marijuana plants and $19,000 have been seized from a two homes in Mount Carmel by police who accused the occupants of operating a marijuana factory.
Police went to 1680 Shepard Ave. on Friday on the report from United Illuminating Co. officials that electricity was being stolen, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.
When police arrived, they smelled a strong odor of marijuana emanating from the residence.
After obtaining a search warrant, officers searched the home and seized hundreds of marijuana plants. A large grow operation was discovered, Smith said.
Further investigation led to the search of 220 Fans Rock Road, and a search took place after a second warrant was secured. Again, police discovered hundreds of marijuana plants, as well as drug paraphernalia and a large grow operation.
The marijuana, which weighed more than 100 pounds, has an estimated street value of $500,000.
Illeana Rivera, 51, and Meelee Rivera, 31, both of 220 Fans Rock Road, were charged with cultivation of marijuana over 1 kilogram, possession of marijuana with the intent to sell over 1 kilogram, possession of marijuana and operating a drug factory. They were both detained at police headquarters in lieu of a $500,000 bail. The investigation is continuing.
