NEW ALBANY, Ind. -- Two burglary suspects were arrested Tuesday morning following a police pursuit.

New Albany Police Department officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress on Wellington Drive at 11:11 a.m. While driving to the scene, Capt. Rick Denny passed a vehicle matching a description given by dispatchers, according to an NAPD news release.

Denny pursued the vehicle southbound on Green Valley Road when the suspects refused to stop, according to police. The vehicle turned westbound onto Crown Court where the driver fled the vehicle on foot heading northbound toward Royal Court.

The driver -- later identified as Cameron Brown, 27, of New Albany -- was apprehended by Denny. Witnesses then advised Officer Richard "Dean" Lyninger that a second suspect, who had been laying down in the seat and hiding, climbed into the driver's seat and drove away.

According to police, Cedrick Smith, 29, of New Albany, crashed into another vehicle on Royal Court while leaving the scene. He then crashed into a tree on Green Valley Road just after Kaufer Drive.

Officers in the area located a residence on Tamara Court that had been broken into and then barricaded allegedly by Smith. Police found Smith hiding in the garage.

While police were still searching for Smith, Brown was transported to the Floyd County Jail where he was able to escape and flee on foot. He was apprehended again in the 400 block of First Street about two blocks from the jail.

"These individuals took extraordinary risks to flee custody and placed the community at great risk," NAPD Chief Todd Bailey said in the news release. "We are pleased to have them in custody."

Brown was preliminarily charged with felony burglary escape and resisting law enforcement. Smith was preliminarily charged with felony burglary, residential entry and resisting law enforcement. They are both being held in the Floyd County Jail awaiting an initial hearing Wednesday.
