Police blew up a suspicious package that prompted a partial evacuation of Methodist Hospital on Monday.

Hospital officials said a man came to the security desk just after 2 p.m. asking for the FBI and was belligerent, telling officers that he had planted several bombs around the hospital.

Security guards and an off-duty officer chased the man down and used a stun gun to subdue him.

Police said the man was carrying a briefcase rigged with wires connected to a cellphone, which ended up near 16th Street and Capitol Avenue.

Bomb experts detonated the device just after 3 p.m. They said they do not believe the package was actually an explosive device.

The man was arrested and was undergoing a psychiatric evaluation.

Streets in the area remained closed at 3:30 p.m. Monday.
