SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- Authorities in Puerto Rico say a 14-year-old boy is in critical condition after a police officer shot him in the head during a drug seizure.

A police statement says the officer fired after the unidentified boy pointed a weapon at him. It says police seized 37 crack rocks and a loaded weapon from the boy as well as 33 bags of marijuana from a nearby abandoned home.

Prosecutors say they are investigating Friday's shooting in the northern town of Vega Baja.

The U.S. Caribbean territory has already set a record for homicides this year, with more than 1,066 people slain on the island of 4 million people. Most of the killings are fueled by the drug trade. The previous high for homicides was 995 in 1994.
