VALLEY BROOK, Okla. -- Three police officers, two from Oklahoma City and one from Valley Brook, were shot and a gunman was killed in a shootout at the city hall.
About 10:45 p.m. Thursday a Valley Brook officer called for assistance from Oklahoma City when a burglar was found in the city hall at 1618 SE 59.
The officers' gunshot wounds are not expected to be life-threatening, said Oklahoma City police Capt. Dexter Nelson. All three officers were taken to OU Medical Center.
Nelson said several agencies are investigating the shootings.
Bloody handprints and letters were smeared on the outside of the Valley Brook city hall.
Richard Hood, 59, a Valley Brook resident whose father E.J. Hood was one of the city founders in 1954, said acting Police Chief Mike Stamp told him Friday that the Valley Brook officer was fortunate he was not more seriously wounded.
"All I know is what Police Chief Stamp told me, that if it wasn't for his cell phone, the officer you know, that's what saved his life," Hood said. "That's all I know."
The man who was shot and killed "was not from Valley Brook as far as I know." Hood said. He also said he was told the man who was killed might have been after guns and that others might have been involved.
Hood said former Valley Brook police Chief Melvin Fisher was fired and Stamp is acting police chief who has asked the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation to assist in the case. Valley Brook Mayor Sam Harp and Stamp were at the city hall Friday morning.
