Officers from the North Kansas City Police Department tried but failed Sunday to find a missing police dog.
"We haven't found the dog but we are still looking," said a dispatcher with the department. "We haven't had any real credible reports; we are just going on what people have seen."
Officers remained in the field late Sunday afternoon, the dispatcher said. A Kansas City police helicopter crew helped in the search Sunday afternoon. Officers on the ground reported tracking two sets of paw prints, one larger than the other, through a wooded area.
Police described the dog as a Belgian Malinois, which resembles a German shepherd. According to police, the dog left a patrol car early Saturday when an officer stopped at 4 a.m. to check a suspicious vehicle at 32nd Street and North Oak Trafficway.
Police are asking anyone who spots the dog to not approach it but to call 816-274-6032.
