Officers followed the suspect at speeds that reached up to 100 mph.

A suspect in a break-in was caught Tuesday on Fort Bragg after leading police on a high-speed chase, authorities said.

The incident happened about 9:45 a.m., according to a release from the Fayetteville Police Department.

Officers were called to a break-in in progress at a home on the 500 block of Hilliard Drive in the Hillendale neighborhood off Rosehill Road, the release said.

Investigators were given information about a white van that was seen in the neighborhood, the release said.

As police were canvassing the area, they saw a vehicle matching that description and attempted to stop it, the release said. The driver wouldn't stop, the release said, and headed toward Murchison Road.

Officers followed and speeds reached up to 100 mph, according to a police spokesman.

Police alerted authorities on Fort Bragg and in Spring Lake that the van was headed in that direction.

Military authorities stopped the van on Honeycutt Road at Watson Street, police said.

Matthew James Smith, 35, of the 4500 block of Oakfield Court, was charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, conspiracy to commit breaking and entering, speeding to elude arrest and multiple traffic offenses, police said.

Authorities said he was being treated at a hospital for undisclosed injuries on Tuesday night.

Further investigation revealed a second man was involved in the breaking and entering.

Police said the second person tried to pawn property taken from the Hilliard Drive residence.

Clarence Darriel Coe, 32, of the 600 block of Mechanic Street, was charged with breaking and entering, larceny after breaking and entering, possession of stolen goods, conspiracy to commit breaking and entering and attempted obtaining property by false pretense.

Coe was booked into the Cumberland County jail with bail set at $12,000.
