Nov. 22--ATHENS -- A Limestone County grand jury has indicted an Alabama state trooper for negligent homicide after a fatal accident that occurred in April.
The indictment charges trooper James Heath Moss, 30, with two counts of negligent homicide, Limestone County Sheriff Mike Blakely said.
Moss turned himself in at the Limestone County Jail on Sunday and was released on $10,000 bail, the sheriff said.
Blakely said Moss was involved in the April 25 wreck on Lucas Ferry Road that killed Jamie Lee Gossett, 31, and his 38-year-old wife, Sarah Rene Gossett.
According to reports, Moss was traveling south on Lucas Ferry Road with his lights and siren on when he hit the Gossett's vehicle near Moyers Road. The couple also was traveling south and had been on their way to pick up their daughters at school.
The lawyer who filed suit on behalf of the Gossett estate said Moss was driving faster than 120 mph just before the crash.
The trooper was driving to another wreck when his vehicle apparently hit the Gossetts, forcing the couple's car to land upside down in a wheat field.
Moss suffered minor injuries, but the Gossetts were burned beyond recognition.
Limestone County Coroner Mike West said the state's forensics lab had to use dental records to identify the couple.
