STOCKTON, Calif. -- During a hearing Thursday, Yonnie Jackson, 40, chose to represent himself against charges of premeditated attempted murder, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Jackson is accused of stalking his estranged wife, Peyton Elementary School Principal Sherry Jackson, since early July.

Yonnie Jackson's attorney, Jesse Ortiz, made a motion to continue a trial date to Dec. 2, deputy defense attorney Scott Porter said. Jackson wouldn't agree to a continuance, so he chose to relieve Ortiz and represent himself rather than continue the trial date.

Another hearing is set for Monday.

Stockton police reported that Yonnie Jackson physically attacked Sherry Jackson in the Walmart parking lot Aug. 15.
