A "smorgasbord" of weapons was found in an Atkins, Va., home after Smyth County Sheriff's Office deputies went there to search for a wanted man, authorities said Wednesday.
Several deputies went to the home in the 600 block of Norton Lane on Saturday looking for Brian Corey Hoover, 22, of Greenway Avenue in Marion. There, they found Hoover and two other men -- along with a cache of weapons, according to police.
When they got to the home, deputies found its resident, 33-year-old Travis Nelson Farmer, and saw a firearm "in plain view," according to a news release from the Sheriff's Office. Deputies obtained a warrant to search the home after they learned that Farmer had previously been convicted of a felony.
Deputies seized 41 items, including 14 firearms, ammunition, the remnants of a methamphetamine lab, marijuana and a pipe bomb, the statement said.
Guns were found in Farmer's bedroom, according to documents filed in Smyth County General District Court.
Bomb technicians from the Virginia State Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigations arrived to deactivate the bomb and the VSP and Sheriff's Office meth lab response team cleaned up the chemicals left from the meth lab, the statement said.
Farmer was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Additional charges are pending, the statement said. Farmer has been previously convicted in Smyth County of felony sale of marijuana and for carrying a firearm while being a convicted felon.
He is currently being without bond held in the Southwest Regional Jail in Abingdon, Va., and will appear in Smyth County General District Court on Dec. 14.
Hoover was arrested for absconding from supervision and Greg Anthony Smith, 50, of Cumberland Street in Marion, the other man deputies found at the home, was arrested on a warrant charging him with contempt of court.
