Man Killed in Shooting at Charlotte Apartment Complex

The shooting happened a few minutes after midnight at the Steeplechase Apartments.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say some sort of meeting among three men in an apartment complex parking lot ended in death for one man early Tuesday morning.

The shooting happened a few minutes after midnight at the Steeplechase Apartments, on Wallace Road off East Independence Boulevard.

Residents of the apartment complex said Tuesday morning they heard at least one gunshot in the parking lot, and when they went outside, they saw a man lying on the ground. That man, whose name has not been released yet by police, had been killed by a gunshot.

Detectives said they were told by witnesses that the victim and another man came to the apartments before midnight, apparently to meet another man. A short time later, witnesses called police after hearing the gunshot.

Police called in their K-9 dog search unit and searched for a time, but that apparently produced no new information.

Detectives indicated Tuesday morning that they had received some tips and were following up. But no arrests have been announced yet, and investigators have not said what led to the shooting.

Anyone with information in the case is asked to call investigators at 704-432-TIPS, or information can be left with Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
